Video
Participants in this fun and active workshop identify different video camera angles, shots exposures and moves. They begin to understand how to storyboard and film subjects accordingly. They also learn the importance of location setting and sound when creating a film. Video cameras are available during this workshop to help the participants try out their newly acquired skills.
Anti-Oppression
What makes us feel oppressed? How do we oppress others? What conscious and unconscious biases do we hold that prevent us from wanting to connect with others that we feel are not like “us”? Based on personal inquiry and group activities this challenging workshop seeks to probe stereotypes and biases to strengthen our abilities to work cooperatively across races, elasticities, genders, geographies, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We strive to build trust and respect and understanding among participants however please note that this can be a very challenging experience and participants may choose not take part in some sessions. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive atmosphere where we feel comfortable learning about people who are different from ourselves and trying out new ways to express ourselves.
Bullying
In the Yukon and around the world bullying plays a major role in youth developing healthy self identifies and self esteem. Our fun and interactive Bullying workshop uses a series of short play performances to go through examples of what different kinds of bullying can look like, while providing participants the opportunity to pause, stop and rewind to look at different approaches and outcomes. In this workshop, we work to be the change we wish to see in the world and we will also share our personal experiences in order to survey the possibilities of countering bullying with understanding, compassion and connection.
Climate Change
“Climate change, and what we do about it, will define us, our era, and ultimately the global legacy we leave for future generations. We hold the future in our hands. Together, we must ensure that our grandchildren will not have to ask why we failed to do the right thing, and let them suffer the consequences.” ~ Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations
We hear about climate change in the media, but what does it really mean? How are we creating it and how can youth make a difference? In this workshop we look at what is really happening – What is the greenhouse effect? How is pollution causing it? - We will also look more broadly into the ripple effect that climate change related issues have on other areas in our communities. This workshop aims to move youth forward into action as we look at creating teams, networks, and action plans to tackle climate change and the spectrum of interconnections related to it. We can determine our future and have lasting impact.

Though youth today might not always feel like it, they have the right to be heard, and the right to participate and share opinions with and among their communities. Developing this awareness brings the confidence to take and share knowledge and become active members in their communities. Activities in this workshop focus on and promote: the value and importance of participating and sharing opinions in our communities, review of places where we can express and be heard (and obstacles to counter to get heard). Promoting the use of critical thinking to implement personal or community projects, we also look at using the Guide to Action toolkit to develop solutions to overcome key obstacles and identify the positive outcomes if these solutions were initiated.
Social networking strategies and tools connect youth to the global social web and each other - this can be especially helpful for communities where youth feel isolation. Motivated by the growing interests of youth-led and youth serving organizations, this workshop was developed to empower youth to utilize free online resources such as social network sites, blogging, photo, image & video spaces, wiki’s and podcasting to become actively engaged in their community and beyond. Some social networking sites include Facebook, MySpace, Care2, and TakingItGlobal; some examples of blogging sites include Wordpress, Blogger, and Technoratic. Fun and appropriate for youth developing in the technological age, these tools can offer opportunities for individual and organizations to improve the way they work, communicate their messages, and, connect and collaborate with one another.
BYTE has developed this empowering workshop with input from youth from across the territory to meet their real needs. We focus on prevention, and also how to deal with difficult situations that do happen. This workshop provides factual information about specific substances, options for handling situations and peer pressure , and on how to deal with substance abusers. We are seeking to create space to explore local realities and the ways that we make choices for ourselves. We are able to distribute support resources such as substance abuse service information but mostly focus on cultivating a sense of ownership.
Many youth today, especially in the north, have seen or experienced violence. Using a combination of videos, activities, and resource handouts, developed specifically for the north, we explore why violence happens, the effects of violence, and how we can make choices that minimize our risk of being involved in violent circumstances and relationships. As well as covering difference types of abuse (financial, physical, psychological/emotional, sexual, spiritual, and verbal) this workshop also covers lateral violence and secondary victimization. We also explore how to best support someone who is experiencing violence, or someone who wants to stop being abusive.
From start to finish this workshop draws out the groups individual and collective messaging and then creates a homemade magaZINE with their voices and artistic expressions displayed. We get creative and crafty in this hands-on workshop. Combining mediums, methods and styles we will create our own ‘zines to share our views with a broader audience, in a creation that is uniquely our own!
