Volunteers provide positive adult role models, in the spirit of fun and friendship, for boys and girls ages 6 to 16, from one-parent homes. These friendships contribute to a child’s healthy development and encourage their growth and maturity as members of society. There are a variety of programs available for children, including traditional one-to-one matching, couples matching, big group activities and an in-school mentoring program. Everyone involved in the program must be screened and interviewed by the organization. Adult volunteers should plan on being in Whitehorse for at least one year.

Northern Cultural Expressions Society: Formerly SunDog Carving Studio
The Sundog Carving Program is increasing development of the Yukon First Nation arts and culture sector, reinforcing positive role modeling and cultural opportunities for Yukon First Nation youth and is creating a more dynamic Yukon First Nation presence on the local and national arts scene. The carvers have an opportunity to increase your fine arts skills and range of artwork (masks, prints, panels, plaques, rattles, paddles, bowls, among other items). The Sundog carvers’ art has been sold locally, nationally and internationally. Diversion Program
The Tan Sakwathan youth Diversion Program provides an eight-week Diversion workshop program to youth between the ages of 12-17 on an annual basis, who are in conflict with the law.The program believes that in order to reduce youth crime, recidivism, and violence in the homes it is instrumental to provide these youth with intervention strategies in order to “break the cycle”.The program incorporates the teaching of traditional ways by strengthening of relationships between families and youth.The program adheres to the philosophy that by increasing youth understanding of traditional values and practices, it permits young people to formulate what a healthy lifestyle, and healthy family should be, empowering youth to make positive changes in their lives.

After School Tutoring
The objective of the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre’s After School Tutoring Program is to work with Aboriginal high school students bridging the transition from elementary to high school, rural to urban schools and providing after school assistance for high school students with special emphasis on those students with learning differences.

Youth Emergency Shelter
To provide a safe bed for youth when needed, and to assist them in reconnecting with family, friends and/or the community.
Target Group
Youth age 17 to 20 years old. Youth under the age of 17 are referred to the Government of Yukon on call Social Worker. Parents/Caregivers of these youth are also contacted.

Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health and Safety Board

Yukon Government: Children’s Assessment and Treatment ServicesResidential Youth Treatment Services (RYTS) RYTS provides both short-term care for children at the Children’s Receiving Home and long-term, group home care.
Children’s Receiving Home The Children’s Receiving Home provides short-term placements for children, 12 to 18 years old, in need of a place of safety. It also provides supervised visits for families, stabilization and short-term care. Referrals are from Family and Children”s Services. Group homes Children in care of the director may be referred to the RYTS program by Family and Children’s Services through the Placements Review Committee. RYTS operated four homes, which provide programming for behaviorally difficult youth between 10 and 18 years of age and their families.

Yukon Government: Child Abuse Treatment Services (CATS)
CAT’s provides professional training workshops, as well as consultation and education, for people working with children. This Yukon-wide service is also offered to members of the community and service organizations. Individual, family and group counseling is available for children who have been physically, sexually, or emotionally abused, and children who have witnessed family violence.The unit is staffed by one supervisor, a full-time intake worker, and five full counselors, confidentiality is a priority.
